You’ve built a website. It looks clean. The navigation seems logical. But here’s the thing — what makes sense to you won’t necessarily make sense to your users. We’ve all experienced it. A button that seems obvious gets ignored. A form that feels straightforward stumps people. That’s where usability testing comes in.
Real testing reveals these friction points. Not through analytics dashboards or heat maps alone, but through watching actual people interact with your design. Participants test your site alone, on their own time. You send them tasks and they record their screen. No moderator asking questions in real-time, which means you get more natural behavior. Scales easily — you can test with 20+ people. The downside? You can’t clarify confusing moments or dig deeper into what you’re seeing.
Moderated testing is your friend when you need depth. You’re redesigning a critical flow? Testing with 5-8 people moderated will show you problems in a couple of days. The moderator guides participants through specific tasks and watches for confusion, hesitation, or workarounds they try.
Here’s what you’ll actually see: A user clicks the wrong button and gets lost. They spend 30 seconds looking for something obvious. They try to use a feature that doesn’t exist yet. These moments are gold. In-person moderated tests catch about 85% of usability issues with just 5 participants. You don’t need huge sample sizes when you’re watching closely.
The key is having a good moderator. They need to stay neutral — no leading questions, no judgment. If a participant struggles, they shouldn’t jump in immediately. Let people try to solve it themselves first. That’s where the real learning happens.

The tradeoff is obvious — you lose the conversation. You can’t ask “Why did you click that?” in the moment. You’re watching video later and making guesses. But here’s what unmoderated testing excels at: confirming patterns. If 15 out of 20 people get stuck on the same screen, that’s a real problem. The sheer volume gives you confidence in what you’re seeing.
Best for validating fixes after moderated testing, or testing with your actual users at scale. Platforms like UserTesting, Maze, or Validately handle the logistics. You write the tasks, pick your participants, and get video back within hours.
The basics that actually matter. Skip the complicated stuff.
Don’t say “explore the site.” Give specific goals. “Find the pricing page” or “Add an item to your cart” or “Reset your password.” Participants need to know what success looks like. Vague tasks create vague results.
Your mom will say everything looks great. Find actual people in your target audience. If you’re testing a tool for accountants, test with accountants. If it’s for students, test with students. You’ll get honest feedback and real problems emerge immediately.
Screen recording is non-negotiable. You’ll miss important details if you’re just taking notes. Watch the video later when you’re not moderating. Zoom has built-in recording. Most platforms handle it automatically. Keep the video until you’ve implemented fixes — you might need to revisit a moment.
One person gets confused by something? Could be them. Three people get confused the same way? That’s a design problem. Look for patterns across participants. If 60% struggle with the same task, that’s actionable. If one person had a weird moment, it might not be.
You’ve watched the videos. You’ve seen where people struggle. Now what? The gap between “we found a problem” and “we fixed it” is where many teams stumble. Don’t just list issues. Understand the root cause.
Example: Three participants couldn’t find the checkout button. Don’t just move it. Ask why they couldn’t find it. Was it the color? The location? The wording? Did they look in the right place but it wasn’t obvious? The specific “why” determines your fix. Maybe the button needs better contrast. Maybe the label was confusing. Maybe people expected it somewhere else entirely.
Prioritize by frequency and impact. A problem that blocks 80% of users is urgent. A problem that only affects 1 person is probably not. A problem that slows people down by 30 seconds matters less than one that causes them to abandon your site.
Pro tip: Share the videos with your team. Reading notes about a problem isn’t the same as watching someone struggle with it for 45 seconds. Seeing is believing. It creates buy-in for changes faster than any report.
Usability testing isn’t complicated. It’s not expensive. It’s not something only big tech companies do. You pick a method, recruit some participants, give them tasks, and watch what happens. That’s it.
The insights you get are worth the effort. You’ll find problems you didn’t know existed. You’ll confirm that features you thought were obvious actually are. You’ll see where people get frustrated. And most importantly, you’ll fix real problems instead of guessing what’s broken.
